Ron Sternberg’s education, unquenchable fascination with things Japanese and a fortunate choice of internships led to a three-decade career in publishing, media and advertising here. A Japanese history major at UCLA, he also went through programs at International Christian University in Tokyo and the Japan-America Institute of Management Science in Hawaii.

The internship—at Hakuhodo, one of Japan’s largest ad agencies— introduced Ron to every facet of advertising and also opened the door to Magazine House, a publisher producing AnAn, Croissant, Popeye, Brutus and other leading lifestyle magazines. Hired as Popeye’s international coordinator, he got an insider’s view of how Japanese see the rest of the world and a deep understanding of their tastes in everything from fashion and food to design, travel and finances.

Ron’s role eventually stretched to include writing, editing, translation and work on other successful Magazine House titles. He also got involved in the business side of the company, including launching a global ad sales program that brought in pages from U.S., Asian and European brands. Realizing that many overseas advertisers and agencies wanted to promote themselves in Japan but had no clue how to create an ad for the local market, Ron and two partners formed a company called FSW in 1990 to pursue the opportunity. In 1996, he broke away to form RCS, picking up Premium Outlets and Visa International (Japan) as clients soon afterward. Both companies remain with RCS.

Ron believes that life is all about being creative, and he loves to cook a meal, plant a garden, and sit in a cafe thinking up new ideas. His favorite possession is his all-carbon Ridley road bike.
